Fermi plans to file for further five gigawatt Texas clean air permit

13th Mar 2026 14:47

(Alliance News) - Fermi Inc on Friday said it will file an additional five gigawatt clean energy permit with Texas regulators to upsize its private power campus to 17 gigawatts.

The Texas-based real estate investment trust, which trades as Fermi America, said it will file for the additional permit with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality within weeks.

It said the move signals its plan for 17 gigawatts of total power at its Project Matador campus in Amarillo, Texas.

Fermi shares were up 3.9% at USD8.15 on Friday afternoon in London.

The company added that it is eyeing 17 gigawatts of total power for its campus, of which 11 gigawatts will come from clean natural gas and 4.4 GW from nuclear energy, with the remainder provided by solar and battery sources.

The announcement comes two weeks after Fermi received the first six gigawatt permit from the Texas environmental regulator.

Fermi said that Project Matador is the only private grid campus with more than two gigawatts to have secured long lead time generation assets, an approved permit, and equipment finance, on top of having a "clear path" to scale to 17 gigawatts.

"Fermi America is positioned to meet hyperscaler demand so that America's great innovators can continue to grow at the speed of capitalism", the company said.

"America's energy needs are surging across every sector - from artificial intelligence and advanced computing to domestic manufacturing, defense, and industrial reshoring. The public grid was not designed to scale at the speed of AI, nor should hard-working Americans foot the bill," the company added.

Chief Executive Officer Toby Neugebauer said that Fermi "is pleased to steward this land and environment well, while creating additional high-paying jobs and economic development" in the Texas Panhandle.
