LONDON (Alliance News) - African low-cost airline fastjet PLC Monday said that its first flight between Tanzania and Zambia flew Saturday, meaning its second international route is now underway as it moves forward with "positive" talks to set up a base in Zambia.
In a statement, the company said sales had been very strong since it launched the route between Dar es Salaam in Tanzania and Lusaka in Zambia in early January and its first flight was full.
The airline has launched the route with a twice-a-week service, but said it expects to increase frequency in the future.
Fastjet has several routes within Tanzania, and last year launched its first international route from Dar es Salaam to Johannesburg in South Africa. It flew 37,458 passengers in December, the highest monthly number since the airline launched.
It is in talks with the Zambian government about establishing a registered operation in that country that would offer domestic and international flights from Lusaka.
"The business and political environments in Zambia are very progressive and our discussions to date have been very positive," fastjet interim Chairman and Chief Executive Ed Winter said Monday.
Fastjet shares were up 4.8% at 2.725 pence Monday morning.
