LONDON (Alliance News) - Fastjet PLC, the African low-cost airline back by easyJet founder Stelios Haji-Ioannou, Wednesday said passenger numbers were up 61% on the year in September including its fly540 airline, although numbers flown in fastjet Tanzania declined 2% from the peak summer travel month of August.
The airline said it flew 81,291 people in September, up from 50,543 a year earlier, including the fly540 airline which operates in Kenya, Ghana and Angola.
Its fastjet Tanzania airline, which will start cross-border operations Friday with a first flight to Johannesburg in South Africa, flew 32,387, down 2% from 33,079 in August, as it expected. Its load factor dropped to 76% from 84% as it put on more flights between Dar es Salaam and Mwanza after night operations at Mwanza airport were approved.
Fastjet Monday said its first flight outside Tanzania will get off the ground Friday after it got clearance from the South African Department of Transport. The airline had to push back the start date after South African transport officials asked for additional documentation before clearing the flights.
Fastjet shares were up 0.8% at 4.008 pence Wednesday morning.
