Evraz Discloses Ongoing Audit Of Active Tailings Storage Facilities

31st Oct 2019 18:14

(Alliance News) - Evraz PLC on Thursday made disclosures around its tailings storage facilities at the request of the Church of England Pensions Board and the Swedish Council on Ethics for the AP Funds.

Shares in Evraz closed down 3.1% at 367.20 pence in London.

These two bodies represent a significant number of Evraz's institutional investors. At present, Evraz opeates three of these facilities "with upstream dams owned by EVRAZ ZSMK (since 2003) and EVRAZ KGOK (since 2004)". There is a dam safety management system in place, with safety zones where living houses and civilian infrastructure are not permitted.

"The processes and procedures are controlled by operations and audited by the HSE (health & safety executive) personnel of the sites, the regulator's inspectors and the EVRAZ's internal industrial safety auditors, and the measures to improve the effectiveness of controls have always been implemented," said Evraz.

The steel and mining company also noted that an audit of the tailings storage facilities is currently being undertaken by its internal industrial safety auditors at all active facilities.

Chief Executive Alexander Frolov said: "The principles of minimising negative impacts on the environment and the efficient use of resources are integrated into Evraz' daily operations. Evraz' strategy for dealing with non-hazardous mining wastes, such as depleted rock, tailings and overburden, is to use them where possible for land rehabilitation and the construction of dams or roads. All non-recyclable waste is stored in facilities that were designed to prevent any harmful substances contained in the waste from escaping into the environment. Safety at such facilities is monitored extremely closely, and all necessary steps have been taken to mitigate any danger as far as possible."
