(Alliance News) - Empire Metals Ltd on Monday said it has produced a high-purity titanium dioxide product with a grade of around 99% TiO2 from its Pitfield project, marking a significant milestone in its product development programme.
Empire Metals shares were up 27% at 17.86 pence each in London on Monday afternoon.
The London-based explorer and resource developer, currently focused on the Pitfield titanium project in Western Australia, said the titanium dioxide or TiO2 was extracted from flotation concentrates taken from the near-surface weathered cap at Pitfield.
The final product was generated using conventional beneficiation, leaching, and refining techniques and contains extremely low levels of impurities, Empire added.
Empire said the product's purity and quality make it potentially suitable for high-grade titanium pigment production or titanium sponge metal, both of which are in demand across industrial and aerospace sectors.
"We have achieved an extraordinary outcome," said Managing Director Shaun Bunn. "It not only highlights the effectiveness of our processing approach but also underscores the potential value of our product."
Empire collected a 70-tonne bulk sample in February, which has now been delivered to the lab for additional testwork and production of final product samples for prospective end-users.
The process used sulphuric acid leaching and a two-stage hydrolysis phase without seed material, followed by calcination to produce the final high-grade TiO2 compound.
