LONDON (Alliance News) - Eden Research PLC Wednesday said the African Regional Intellectual Property Organisation has approved its patent for Yeast Glucan Particles.
Eden, which develops products to combat fungal infections in strawberries, other fruits, vegetables and plants, said the patent is for the use of yeast glucan particles as a natural carrier particle for a terpene. or combination of terpenes, with or without an additional active substance.
Terpenes are a large group of volatile unsaturated hydrocarbons found in the essential oils of plants, especially conifers and citrus trees. Eden's products encapsulate the terpenes to treat fungal infections of plants, while it also works on products to defend soil against infestation by plant parasites that severely damage crops such as potatoes, tomatoes, carrots and grapevines.
ARIPO's designated states for application of the patent are: Botswana, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
"Africa has become an increasingly significant market in the worldwide food and crop production sector with a growing amount of the food and other crops, such as cut flowers, being exported to European supermarkets," Clive Newitt, managing director, said in a statement.
"The increased patent coverage in the ARIPO region ensures that Eden licensees can commercialise products with strong IP protection surrounding the use of Eden's unique technologiesm, he added.
Eden Research shares were Wednesday quoted at 14.05 pence, down 0.45 pence, or 3.1%.
