easyJet To Resume Flights To Egypt Hotspot After UK Restriction Lifted

15th Jan 2020 14:08

(Alliance News) - easyJet PLC on Wednesday said it will resume flights to Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt, after UK restrictions on travel to the tourist resort following the 2015 bombing of a Russian airline was lifted.

The budget airline will offer two weekly flights to famous tourist spot from June 7 at Manchester Airport and September 30 at Gatwick airport. It will be easyJet's first flights to Sharm el-Sheikh in more than four years.

easyJet UK Country Manager Ali Gayward said: "We are looking forward to operating these flights this summer and adding them to an ever growing range of great destinations for our customers."

In October, restrictions on flights between the UK and Sharm el-Sheikh have been lifted after nearly four years.

The Department for Transport announced that it has ended the ban due to improvements in security procedures at the Egyptian resort's airport and close co-operation between the UK and Egypt on aviation security.

Sharm el-Sheikh was a popular destination with UK tourists until all UK flights were halted in November 2015 following the bombing of a Russian airliner which killed all 224 people on board.

Travel firm TUI AG in November said it would resume flights to Sharm el-Sheikh in February.

easyJet shares were 1.2% lower at 1,491.00 pence each in London on Wednesday afternoon.
