easyJet sets out plan to reach 2050 net-zero carbon emissions target

26th Sep 2022 11:06

(Alliance News) - easyJet PLC on Monday set out its plan to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The Luton Airport-based budget airline said it will transition away from offsetting to focus on driving in-sector emission reductions to deliver its Net Zero roadmap.

easyJet noted that its carbon intensity is around 18% lower than the global narrowbody average. It aims to achieve 35% carbon emission intensity reduction by 2035 and 78% less by 2050.

As part of this transition, easyJet has ordered 168 aircraft to be delivered up until financial year 2029. The new NEO aircraft minimise fuel burn and emissions through current technology, the company explained.

It also aims to improve operational efficiency through fuel savings from numerous initiatives including Descent Profile Optimisation, single-engine taxiing and engine washing.

The company will also use sustainable aviation fuels at scale in line with Refuel EU proposed mandates as a minimum.

In July, easyJet partnered with aerospace manufacturer Rolls-Royce Holdings PLC to develop hydrogen engines capable of powering commercial passenger planes. Both companies are signed up to reaching net zero for carbon emissions by 2050.

Chief Executive Johan Lundgren said: "Today, we're the first airline to outline an ambitious roadmap in which zero carbon emission technology plays a key role to take us to net-zero emissions by 2050 and ultimately to zero carbon emission flying across our entire fleet. And I'm really pleased that our partner Rolls Royce has also confirmed today it is making final preparations for the first hydrogen engine tests to take place."

Shares in easyJet were down 2.5% to 299.10 pence each in London on Monday morning.
