LONDON (Alliance News) - Deltex Medical Group PLC Tuesday said that a US hospital in which its oesophageal Doppler monitoring technology has been introduced has now made it part of its enhanced recovery protocol for all colorectal surgery and could expand it to other areas such as urology and gynaecology.
The company said doctors from the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, presented the results from introduction of oesophageal Doppler monitoring as a quality improvement initiative in colorectal surgery at the 2015 meeting of the American Society for Colon and Rectal Surgeons.
Oesophageal Doppler monitoring was one of the main changes made to introduce an enhanced recovery approach to surgery. The results highlights included 18.5% of patients discharged on day two after surgery, compared with historic control of 1.7% of patients discharged on day two, a 25% reduction in both median and mean length of stay, greater than 80% reductions in both post-operative cardiac events and wound infections, and earlier return to diet and bowel function.
Deltex said that based on the results, the hospital's management has recommended making the new recovery protocols including oesophageal Doppler monitoring the default protocol for all colorectal surgeries, with the potential to expand into other surgical areas such as urology and gynaecology.
"This convergence of our US platform and market development programmes is important validation of our focused strategy to build our US business towards future national roll-out," Deltex Chief Executive Ewan Phillips said.
Deltex Medical shares were up 9.6% at 7.12 pence early Tuesday.
