Deliveroo expands Waitrose grocery delivery pact to 150 stores

27th Apr 2021 09:19

(Alliance News) - Deliveroo PLC on Tuesday said it has expanded its partnership with UK grocer Waitrose, following a "successful" trial.

The two-year deal means 110 new Waitrose shops will have access to Deliveroo's grocery delivery service. Up to 400 new roles at Waitrose will be created as a result, Deliveroo noted.

"It will increase the number of Waitrose shops on Deliveroo to 150 in total by the end of the summer and is expected to take the number of people who are able to enjoy Waitrose food on Deliveroo to around 13 million. The partnership is a central part of Deliveroo's expansion strategy across the UK, currently at 60% of the UK population, as the company aims to build the best proposition to attract new consumers, restaurants, grocers and riders throughout 2021," Deliveroo said.

A five-store trial began in September last year and currently, the Deliveroo service is available in 40 Waitrose stores. The service has boosted Waitrose's popularity among younger shoppers, Deliveroo claimed. Waitrose is part of John Lewis Partnership PLC.

Earlier in April, Deliveroo said it has expanded its grocery delivery partnership with J Sainsbury PLC to around 100 UK stores as part of a similar two-year contract.

Deliveroo shares were 2.3% higher at 234.14 pence each in London on Tuesday morning.
