(Alliance News) - Deliveroo Holdings PLC on Tuesday said it has expanded its grocery delivery partnership with J Sainsbury PLC to around 100 UK stores as part of a new two-year contract.
The new locations include stores in Leeds, York, Liverpool, Newcastle, Glasgow and Aberdeen. The expansion also includes 22 new stores in London, the UK's capital.
Deliveroo hailed the "rapid growth" of its partnership with Sainsbury's and added that about 30% of the UK can now have 1,000 of the grocer's products delivered to them in as little as 20 minutes.
"Working with Deliveroo has helped us offer home grocery deliveries to even more customers, bringing them a super-fast service when they need something in a hurry. We know how much Sainsbury's customers value being able to shop for food as quickly and conveniently as possible and we're delighted to be able to expand this service further," Sainsbury's Director of eCommerce Nigel Blunt said.
The Covid-19 pandemic and the resultant stay-at-home measures meant more consumers in the UK turned to grocery delivery, leading to a boom in online sales for supermarkets.
Deliveroo Chief Marketplace Officer Eric French said: "We are delighted to announce this expansion of our new partnership with Sainsbury's, which has proved so popular with customers. Deliveroo's on-demand grocery partnerships have proven vital for so many people during the pandemic, allowing families to get the food and household items they need and want quickly. We are excited to continue expanding this partnership in the weeks ahead and offer Sainsbury's amazing products to even more customers across the UK."
Deliveroo shares were 4.3% higher at 261.70 pence each in London on Tuesday afternoon. Sainsbury's was down 0.1% at 244.90p.
