'Czech Sphinx' Now Sainsbury's Fourth Largest Investor

(Alliance News) - Activist investor Daniel Kretinsky, also known as the 'Czech Sphinx', has become J Sainsbury PLC's fourth largest shareholder with just under a 3.1% stake.

According to a regulatory filing from Sainsbury's on Thursday, the 67.7 million share stake was purchased through Kretinsky's company Vesa Equity Investment Sarl. The transaction is worth close to GBP130 million based on the Thursday closing price of 191.15p.

Shares in the supermarket chain ended 3.3% higher in London on Thursday. They have fallen 17% since the start of 2020.

Kretinsky is already Royal Mail PLC's largest shareholder, holding a 13.1% stake.
