(Alliance News) - Medical device maker Creo Medical Group PLC on Wednesday said its Speedboat device has been used in humans in India for the first time.
Speedboat, Chepstow-headquartered Creo's gastrointestinal medical product, is intended for use in flexible endoscopy, where it lets doctors perform surgical procedures such as removing cancerous and pre-cancerous growths.
The first mentored in-human use of this device has now occurred in India and follows a framework distribution agreement with Meditek Systems, signed in September, which covers clinical in-country training and mentoring in India for Creo's CROMA Advanced Energy Platform and products, including Speedboat.
So far, medical staff from six Indian healthcare institutions have completed training under Creo's clinical education programme and the first two procedures using Speedboat were performed.
As well as India, patients have now been treated using the CROMA platform in the US, UK, South Africa, and mainland Europe.
Chief Executive Craig Gulliford said: "We are delighted to hear that Creo's Speedboat device has been rolled out in the [Baldota Institute of Digestive Sciences] hospital and that the first live procedures have been a success, and are due to be followed by other procedures this week.
"India is one of the fastest growing healthcare markets in the world and is rapidly evolving in pioneering clinical practice. We look forward to further positive news on the subsequent surgeries."
Shares in Creo were up 0.6% at 201.78 pence in London on Wednesday afternoon.
