CMA Asks UK Supermarkets To Review Promotional Deals

27th Apr 2016 13:46

LONDON (Alliance News) - The UK Competition and Markets Authority has asked a number of supermarkets to review their promotions in order to ensure that shoppers get a good deal.

Supermarkets, such as J Sainsbury PLC, Tesco PLC and Wm Morrison Supermarkets PLC, have been accused of confusing shoppers with promotions such as '3 for 2' and 'buy-one-get-one-free' and as a result have been cutting down the number of special offers they run and replacing them with permanent lower prices.

The CMA on Thursday said it has been working with supermarkets to ensure that 'was/now' offers and multi-buy deals are genuine, so shoppers can see when they are getting a real discount.

The CMA noted that it received a particular commitment from Asda Stores Ltd to change its promotional practices and strengthen its compliance controls. Asda has agreed that 'now' prices will not be advertised longer than the 'was' price applied, multi-buy offers will represent better value than a single product before the offer, and multi-buy offers will not immediately be followed by 'was/now' promotions.

"We welcome the commitment we have received from Asda as well as the engagement from other supermarkets, and expect them all to ensure that their practices are not misleading and that shoppers are better informed and able to choose the products that most suit their needs," CMA Executive Director Michael Grenfell said in a statement.
