CityFibre Lodges UK Appeal Against "Poor And Inconsistent" Ofcom Rules

6th Jul 2016 07:08

LONDON (Alliance News) - Fibre optic broadband infrastructure owner and operator CityFibre Infrastructure Holdings PLC on Wednesday said it has lodged an appeal over the regulations set out by UK telecoms regulator Ofcom in its 2016 Business Connectivity Market Review.

CityFibre said it will update the market on the outcome of the appeal when appropriate.

Ofcom published the outcome of the review in March, which focused on new rules to push telecommunications giant BT Group PLC to improve its performance in installing high-speed business lines and to significantly cut the wholesale prices the telecoms group charges for those lines.

"As a major investor in the UK telecom infrastructure market, working to transform digital connectivity across the country, we need to ensure that CityFibre and other fibre optic infrastructure builders can invest against the background of a fair and balanced regulatory regime," said Mark Collins, director of strategy and public affairs at CityFibre.

"We believe Ofcom is implementing poor and inconsistent regulation, and we have a duty to robustly contest their decisions and policies in the normal course of business - especially where they conflict with stimulating long-term investment in the critical digital infrastructure which the UK so badly needs," he added.
