London (Alliance News) - Train traffic through the Channel Tunnel is operating again, the tunnel's operator reported Sunday, a day after all service was interrupted due to a lorry fire near the French mouth of the tunnel.
"We confirm that a small fire on board a freight shuttle in the tunnel was brought immediately under control," read a statement from Groupe Eurotunnel SA, which operates the tunnel beneath the English Channel and the Le Shuttle service through it.
No injuries were reported, though it did require all trains to return to their points of origin.
Trains were departing once an hour Sunday.
The tunnel consists of two subterranean tubes carrying passenger trains between London and Paris and Brussels. There is also a car ferry and freight service running from Folkstone in Britain to Calais in France.
