CBI Says EU Regulations Shouldn't Restrict Competitiveness

15th Oct 2013 05:22

LONDON (Alliance News) - The Confederation of British Industry Tuesday said EU regulations need to apply evenly across Europe without impeding competitiveness of British businesses.

The CBI was responding to the UK Government's business taskforce on EU regulation, which was set up to ask UK firms to help identify where action is most needed to roll back EU red tape.

Although the CBI admitted that significant strides in singling out areas of concern for business, it warned that nobody wants a situation in which smaller firms are saddled with poorly thought-out EU regulations which impede their ability to grow.

"British businesses need a level-playing field so all rules must apply evenly across the EU. Any European reform agenda must focus on how best to create growth and jobs," Katja Hall, CBI Chief Policy Director, said in a statement.

A recent CBI/YouGov survey found that 39% of respondents wanted EU rules applied evenly across all member states. The survey also found that 39% of respondents also wanted a reduction in regulation.

The business taskforce is led by six business leaders, including Diageo's former Chief Executive, Paul Walsh, and Marks & Spencer Chief Executive Marc Bolland.
