Cairn Energy To Drill Another Well On SNE Field As Success Continues

11th Apr 2016 06:32

LONDON (Alliance News) - Cairn Energy PLC on Monday said the latest well to be drilled offshore Senegal has confirmed that the high-quality reservoirs that have been found elsewhere on the field extend to the northern part of the licence area, adding the next well will be drilled on the field shortly.

The oil and gas company said the BEL-1 well was targeting the Bellatrix exploration prospect and appraising the northern extent of the SNE field discovered in 2014.

"The BEL-1 appraisal results have provided definitive information confirming the northern extent of the high quality reservoirs seen in the other wells and demonstrated an increased oil column in this area of the field," said Chief Executive Simon Thomson.

Cairn said the well has confirmed the extension of the reservoirs into the northern area of the SNE field, adding the quality of the upper reservoirs sands was "good". The well has also shown there is a good correlation between the reservoir units encountered between the BEL-1 well and three other wells that have been previously drilled: SNE-1, SNE-2 and SNE-3.

The gas-oil and oil-water depths within BEL-1 indicates there is an oil column of 100.0 metre gross, which Cairn said is similar to the results from the three previously drilled wells.

Cairn has now taken 144.0 metres of continuous core from the reservoir interval and said multiple samples of gas, oil and water have been recovered from the surface, stating the initial evaluation suggests the quality is again of a similar nature to what has been found in the other appraisal wells on the field.

Due to the ongoing success of the appraisal programme on the field, Cairn said the joint venture has agreed to drill another well on the field, SNE-4, which will test the eastern area of the field.

"Operations have been safely and successfully completed and significant data gathered to help the joint venture partners establish the ultimate size of the significant resource base. The evaluation programme continues with the SNE-4 well," said Thomson.

Cairn has a 40% working interest in the three blocks offshore Senegal that make up the SNE field.
