London (Alliance News) - A Legoland resort outside London said Thursday it was shutting its hotel this weekend, after receiving threats from right-wing extremists over its agreement to hold an event for Muslim families.
Legoland Windsor was due to host around 1,000 Muslim families at a private event at the resort on Sunday organized by the Muslim Research and Development Foundation.
But a Legoland spokeswoman said after talking with police and organizers it had decided to cancel the event and close the 150-room hotel, following a series of threatening phone calls, emails and social media posts.
The theme park itself was anyway to be closed to the public this weekend.
Legoland was "extremely sorry" and "wholeheartedly" understood the disappointment of the families that had been due to attend, the spokeswoman said, but added: "The safety and security of our guests and our members of staff has to be our number one priority."
A far-right British National Party blogger had written about the event before it was cancelled, urging other members to ring and complain to Legoland.
