BP Ploughs EUR10 Million Into Finnish Transport App Whim

7th Nov 2019 14:33

(Alliance News) - BP PLC on Thursday said it has made an investment into a firm which bundles a wide range of transport services into one app.

Oil major BP has put EUR10 million into MaaS Global, a company which has developed Whim. Whim is an app which enables customers to access all available transport options in a city onto one platform.

This investment into Finnish app Whim, BP said, is part of a strategy to develop mobility and transport options.

Roy Williamson, vice-president of Advanced Mobility at BP, said: "Whim is super convenient. It offers users a single digital key that unlocks the full spectrum of city transport. It takes the hassle out of planning travel, taking on board users' preferences and connecting and booking their ideal transport choices.

"The MaaS Global team is at the forefront of a tech-enabled mobility evolution – from having to own a vehicle to being able to easily connect and use all available forms of transport. Our collaboration is a great example of BP's vision for the future of transportation, mobility and integrated cities."

Whim was launched in Helsinki in November 2017, and it has since become available in Birmingham, Vienna, and Antwerp, and BP hopes its investment can help it roll out in other cities. The immediate focus will be on Singapore and US cities.

BP shares were 0.3% lower on Thursday afternoon in London at a price of 512.40 pence each.
