BP achieves first gas at Matapal asset ahead of schedule

(Alliance News) - BP PLC on Monday said its Matapal project off the coast of Trinidad & Tobago has achieved first gas, a feat it has accomplished ahead of schedule, despite Covid-19.

Matapal is a second subsea development from the oil major's BP Trinidad & Tobago LLC unit. It comprises of three wells.

"Natural gas will play an important role in the energy transition and to the economy of Trinidad and Tobago for decades to come. This is why our team at bpTT has worked diligently to safely start up our Matapal project which we successfully achieved both under budget and ahead of schedule. We are committed to a strong energy future in Trinidad and Tobago and this project plays a critical role in delivering that," BP Trinidad & Tobago President Claire Fitzpatrick said.

Initial output from Matapal, once all wells are fully ramped up, will amount to 250 million and 350 million standard cubic feet per day.

BP shares were 0.1% higher at 304.85 pence each in London on Monday afternoon.
