Botswana Diamonds And Alrosa Restart Exploration Work In Botswana

5th Mar 2015 08:40

LONDON (Alliance News) - Botswana Diamonds PLC Thursday said it has recommenced exploration work in Orapa, Botswana, with its joint venture partner Alrosa.

A joint team from both companies have restarted exploration work on three blocks with the aim of finding major new kimberlites, an igneous rock that is associated with containing diamonds.

Alrosa is a Russian group of diamond mining companies, which is the world leader in diamond mining by volume, according to Botswana Diamonds. Both companies hold an equal 50% stake in the three blocks.

Restarting exploration in the area follows on from an exploration programme carried out in the third quarter of 2013. The results from that programme have now been analysed by Alrosa to define the targets for the new programme, which is focused on further soil sampling, electromagnetic and ground magnetic surveys, it said.

Rock samples and kimberlite indicator minerals, which are other minerals associated with diamonds that hint of their presence, will be analysed by Alrosa and forged together with geophysical data before a final result of the new exploration programme are revealed, said Botswana Diamonds.

Botswana Diamond shares rose 10% on Thursday morning to 1.38 pence per share.
