boohoo Names UK Media Ethics Inquiry Boss Leveson For Supply Probe

26th Nov 2020 10:41

(Alliance News) - boohoo Group PLC on Thursday said it has called on Brian Leveson to provide independent oversight as a probe into the fast fashion retailer's supply chain continues.

Leveson, also known for chairing the eponymous inquiry into ethics of the UK press in the wake of the phone scandal, will report directly to the boohoo's board.

The company said his reports will be published, allowing greater "transparency and further independence to the process".

boohoo added: "In recent weeks, and as part of significant and continuing investment by the group in this area, significant steps have been taken to put in place the platform that will facilitate delivery of the agenda for change programme.

"The group has appointed KPMG to assist with the programme, bringing additional resource, expertise and independence to the process. KPMG will work with the group's growing responsible sourcing and compliance team, and existing supply chain auditors Bureau Veritas and Verisio."

Back in October, boohoo confirmed it ended a relationship with a Leicester-based firm which was linked with fraud and money laundering.

A probe by the BBC found a network of companies based in Leicester have been involved in VAT fraud and money laundering.

boohoo said that in October, it dropped Rose Fashions as a supplier after the BBC found one of the Leicester-based firm's directors was part of a money-laundering network.

boohoo had arranged for an independent probe on its supply chain back in July.

Shares in the company were 0.6% higher at 292.08 pence each in London on Thursday morning.
