Biome awarded government funding to improve food packaging shelf life

5th Sep 2022 17:05

(Alliance News) - Biome Technologies PLC on Monday announced that its bioplastics division has been awarded UK funding of GBP244,000.

Biome are a Southampton-based plastic material and resin manufacturing company.

The funding was awarded by the UK government's Innovate UK scheme to support a collaborative development with South Korean company ANPOLY Inc to improve shelf life performance of food packaging made from Biome's bioplastics.

ANPOLY is a spin out from Korean university, POSTECH, with advanced technology to produce celllulose nano-fibres.

Biome said the use of cellulose nan-fibres can offer similar performance to the more commonly used fossil-based additives but with greater sustainable credentials.

It is expected that products derived from this collaboration will be commercialised after product completion.

The project will have a total investment of GBP794,000 and will begin in October 2022, lasting two years.

Chief Executive Paul Mines said: "We believe these could represent an important addition to the business's product range in due course and will bring benefits to manufacturers, consumers and the environment."

Biome shares closed 1.1% lower at 178.00 pence each in London on Monday.
