Bigblu Broadband Unit Quickline Selected To Lead GBP6 Million Project

20th Feb 2020 16:15

(Alliance News) - Bigblu Broadband PLC on Thursday said its subsidiary Quickline Communications has been selected to lead a GBP6 million project to boost rural connectivity in north Yorkshire.

Quickline - in partnership with a mix of specialist small to medium enterprises and the universities of York and Lancaster - will investigate how rural mobile connectivity can help eliminate the not-spots of North Yorkshire by developing new technologies, apps and services tailored for rural areas.

A not-spot area is one that as no broadband Internet or 3G mobile phone coverage, or where any connection is very slow and unreliable.

The project will also seek to understand how the public, private and community sectors can work together to reduce the cost of delivering mobile access in such areas.

The partnership has secured GBP4.5 million of government funding, with an additional GBP2 million being added by industry partners.

The project is supported by the Department of Digital, Culture, Media & Sports as part of the GBP30 million 5G Rural Connected Communities Trials and Testbed programme.

"Quickline's mission is to use innovation in equipment and approach to bring ubiquitous coverage of high-speed data and associated services across the harder to reach parts of the country. We are pleased to be part of a project that shares these values and outcomes and are excited by the opportunity to push the boundaries further," said Quickline Chief Executive Steve Jagger.

Bigblu stock was trading 0.6% down at 83.50 pence each on Thursday afternoon in London.
