(Alliance News) – BHP Group Ltd on Tuesday announced it has submitted its Escondida New Concentrator project to Chile's Environmental Assessment System as part of its long‑term investment plans for the Escondida mine.
The Melbourne, Australia-based diversified miner said the proposed concentrator represents a USD4.4 billion to USD5.9 billion investment and is intended to replace the capacity of the ageing Los Colorados plant, which is nearing the end of its operating life.
The new facility is designed to produce 220,000 to 260,000 tonnes of copper per year, with Los Colorados to be demolished once operations starts.
BHP noted that construction would generate significant economic activity, averaging 2,500 workers per month and peaking at around 6,000.
Subject to environmental approval, the project would require a multi‑year build, with first production targeted for 2031 to 2032. The concentrator would allow Escondida to maintain its overall processing capacity of 460,000 tonnes per day of ore within existing approvals.
BHP shares were up 1.1% at AUD49.73 in Sydney on Tuesday afternoon.
