BHP Billiton: Law Firm To Probe Brazil Dam Burst As Death Toll Rises

22nd Dec 2015 07:40

LONDON (Alliance News) - BHP Billiton PLC on Tuesday said there will be an external investigation into what caused the deadly collapse of a tailings dam in Brazil, as the total death toll rose to 17 from the previous estimate of 13, with two people still unaccounted for.

BHP and partner Brazilian miner Vale SA have asked New York-based law firm Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP to conduct the external investigation into the cause of the breach of the Fundão tailings dam and the Santarém water dam.

BHP said the findings of the investigation will be released publicly.

Those displaced by the disaster will have been given the opportunity to relocate before December 25, the company said.

The Samarco dam in Mariana burst last month. BHP holds a 50% stake in Samarco Mineracao SA, the joint venture entity that operates the project. Vale owns the other 50%.
