(Alliance News) - Berkeley Energia Ltd on Tuesday said it has been granted the Urbanism licence needed for construction works at the Salamanca uranium mine in Spain.
Shares in Berkeley, which is focused on developing the uranium project, were up 17% at 31.13 pence in London on Tuesday afternoon.
The urbanism licence is a land use permit required for construction works at Salamanca and was granted by the Municipality of Retortillo and represents "a significant permitting milestone for Berkeley and a positive step in the development of the project".
The only pending approval is authorisation for construction for the uranium concentrate plant as a radioactive facility. A number of teleconference meetings have taken place with the Nuclear Safety Council technical team since Berkeley applied for this authorisation in late March to discuss "minor queries" as well as updating documentation.
"As requested by the NSC, the company is currently preparing written responses to these queries and will complete this task in the coming weeks. Following submission of the written responses, the next step in the process is for the NSC technical team to finalise its report and submit it to the NSC board for ratification," said Berkeley.
In July, the NSC issued a favourable report in extending the validity of the initial authorisation for the plant as a radioactive facility, after this was granted in September 2015, with a validity period of five years.
The next step will be for the Ministry for Ecological Transition & Demographic Challenge to approve this authorisation and set a duration period.
"The company will continue to engage with the relevant authorities in a collaborative manner and maintain strong engagement with all key stakeholders in Spain, as it progresses the approvals required to commence full construction of the Salamanca mine and bring it into production," Berkeley said.
