LONDON (Alliance News) - Balfour Beatty PLC Friday said it has been awarded a GBP78 million contract by the city of Charlotte, North Carolina to build the track and systems components for the new Charlotte Area Transit System Lynx Blue Line Extension.
This contract is in addition to the GBP63 million civil contract won in February for the Blue Line Capacity Expansion Project.
The Blue Line extends Charlotte's Lynx light rail system by 9.3 miles northeast through the North Davidson and University areas, terminating on the UNC Charlotte campus.
Balfour Beatty will be responsible for the construction of the ballasted track, traction power system, overhead catenary system, train control, communications and other systems. Balfour Beatty said its Traction Power Group, which is headquartered in North Carolina, will be responsible for providing 11 traction power substations.
Construction is due to start this summer and should be completed in December 2016.
Balfour Beatty shares were quoted up 0.2% at 225.20 pence Friday morning.
