(Alliance News) - BAE Systems PLC on Friday said it has been awarded a Eurofighter contract worth GBP135 million to enhance the Typhoon combat aircraft.
The London and Farnborough-headquartered security and aerospace company said the contract is part of an ongoing commitment by the Eurofighter consortium and the UK, Spain, Italy and Germany to improve the military aircraft's capabilities.
Under the contract, BAE will improve the Typhoon's weapons capability and precision, defensive systems and high-speed data sharing.
Current development work on the aircraft includes plans for large, touchscreen displays in the cockpit, funded by BAE, to allow pilots access to more data from the craft's sensors and data-links.
"This contract marks another significant milestone in the continued development of Typhoon’s capability as we apply our breadth of expertise to further advance its combat air capability, ensuring it has the technologies required for the future battlespace," said Richard Hamilton, Typhoon programme director.
"The contract will sustain 100 highly-skilled engineering roles in the North West and...will help to keep the UK skill base at the forefront of the global combat air sector," Hamilton added.
The Eurofighter consortium includes the core nations' industrial partners comprising Airbus SE, BAE Systems and Leonardo Spa.
The aerospace company recently reported strong interim result including 67% jump in pretax profit to GBP1.15 billion in the six months ended June 30 from GBP689 million the year prior. Meanwhile, revenue rose 1.7% year-on-year to GBP9.34 billion in the first half from GBP9.18 billion.
Shares in BAE Systems were trading down 0.2% at 575.40 pence each in London on Friday.
