LONDON (Alliance News) - BAE Systems PLC Monday said it is working with Cummins Inc to provide transit bus operators in the US with engine stop/start technology to shut off bus engines as passengers board and disembark, in an effort to reduce air and noise pollution.
Indiana-based Cummins is a designer and manufacturer of power generation equipment, power systems, gasoline engines, custom power supplies .
BAE Systems' start/stop technology, also known as anti-idle mode, has been tested on buses with Red Rose Transit in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and Metro Minneapolis in Minnesota, and is expected to be rolled out to other customers later this year.
The company said tests have shown that the stop/start mode reduces engine idling time by up to 40%, which helps increase fuel economy and create a quieter atmosphere for passengers at bus stops.
BAE shares were quoted up 0.6% at 428.50 pence Monday afternoon.
