LONDON (Alliance News) - WS Atkins PLC Tuesday said that it has been awarded a GBP75 million contract to be lead designer for the largest current public-transportation project in the world.
The holding company, which is engaged in engineering and design consultancies, said that it will lead a design joint venture with Spanish consultancy Typsa, to design three of the six lines of the planned Riyadh Metro in the Saudi Arabian capital.
Atkins said its designs will be used by the FAST consortium - compromising of FCC, Samsung, Alstom, Strukton and Freyssinet. FAST is responsible for metro lines 4, 5 and 6, representing just over a third of the total track.
WS Atkins said that FAST's design-and-build package, awarded by the Arriyadh Development Authority, includes 25 stations, two depots, and seven park-and-ride car parks, with a total capital cost of approximately GBP5 billion.
Atkins said that it will draw upon a multidisciplinary team of around 200 specialist staff from its offices in Riyadh, the UAE, Bangalore, Hong Kong and the UK.
The company shares were amongst the biggest gainers Tuesday morning, trading at 1,124.00 pence per share, up 1.3%.
