(Alliance News) - The founder of Primark, Arthur Ryan, has died aged 83, the Irish retailing giant's parent company, Associated British Foods PLC, confirmed to dpa on Monday.
Ryan opened the discount fashion chain's first store in 1969 in Dublin, under the name Penneys, which is still used for the shops in Ireland to this day.
The company now has 370 stores in 12 countries and employs more than 75,000 people.
Ryan stayed out of the limelight for much of his life.
ABF said he died after a short illness. The parent company's chief executive, Paul Merchant, paid tribute to "one of the great giants of retailing".
