LONDON (Alliance News) - ARM Holdings PLC Tuesday announced a new suite of intellectual properties that are expected to be launched on mobile devices in 2016, including its ARM Cortex-A72 processor.
The chip designer said that in target configurations, the new processor well deliver CPU performance that is 50 times that of leading smart-phones from five years ago.
"Our new premium mobile experience IP suite with the Cortex-A72 processor delivers a decisive step forward from the compelling user experiences provided by this year's Cortex-A57 based devices," said Pete Hutton, president of ARM's products group. "In 2016 the ARM ecosystem will deliver even slimmer, lighter, more immersive mobile devices that serve as your primary and only compute platform."
Shares in ARM are trading up 1.5% at 1,052.00 pence Wednesday morning.
ARM's main customers are experiencing mixed fortunes. Sony Corp Wednesday said it expects significant growth in its third-quarter profit with higher sales, despite the estimated impact of the cyber attack in its Pictures business segment. Sony also lifted its forecast for the full year, now projecting narrower net loss and higher sales than expected earlier.
Last week, Apple Inc said that its first quarter profit rose 38% from last year, driven by all time record revenue from iPhone and Mac sales as well as record performance of its App Store. At the same time, the company gave a slightly downbeat revenue forecast for the current quarter.
South Korean conglomerate Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, meanwhile, reported a profit for the fourth quarter that declined 27% from last year, despite an uptick in memory demand, reflecting lower operating margins and soft sales growth of smartphones amid intensifying competition.
