LONDON (Alliance News) - Aquarius Platinum Ltd Wednesday said it had suspended blasting in a shaft at its Kroondal platinum mine after a female employee was found dead in the shaft.
The company said it couldn't provide any details of the incident, but initial investigations suggest the woman may have been assaulted. It said blasting had been suspended to allow South African police to conduct a forensic investigation.
"Aquarius deplores any incidence of violence. The company will work closely with the (police), the Department of Mineral Resources, and employee representatives to support her family and in the course of the investigation," the company said in a statement.
It said it was withholding the employee's name out of respect for her family.
Aquarius Platinum shares were down 3.6% at 46.75 early Wednesday.
