(Alliance News) - Anglo American PLC on Tuesday said Themba Mkhwanazi will replace Seamus French as chief executive of Bulk Commodities, after French decided to leave at the end of 2021.
Mkhwanazi currently serves as CEO of Kumba Iron Ore Ltd, a Gauteng-based miner in which Anglo American has a 65% stake. Mkhwanazi will be replaced by Mpumi Zikalala, currently serving as managing director of De Beers Managed Operations.
Both appointments will take effect on January 1, 2022.
Zikalala's successor at De Beers Managed Operations will be confirmed in due course, the company said. De Beers is Anglo American's diamond mining and sales business.
"Themba will shape the strategy for our global iron ore, metallurgical coal and manganese interests," said Anglo American CEO Mark Cutifani.
"Mpumi's extensive operational experience at De Beers will be instrumental as she builds on Kumba's progress to drive sustained safe, world-class performance working closely with its strategic business partners," added Cutifani.
In addition, Anglo American said CEO of Base Metals Ruben Fernandes also will take on accountability for the iron ore and the nickel operations in Brazil. As planned, the Quellaveco copper operation in Peru will move to the Base Metals portfolio once it is commissioned.
Anglo American is a London-based producer of platinum, diamonds, copper, nickel, iron ore and metallurgical & thermal coal. The stock was trading 0.5% lower in London on Tuesday at 2,578.26 pence a share. In Johannesburg, the shares also were down 0.5%, at ZAR529.89. Kumba Iron Ore shares were down 2.1% at ZAR476.76.
