Anglo American copper project wins environmental approval in Chile

18th Apr 2023 07:50

(Alliance News) - Anglo American PLC said on Tuesday it has secured environmental approval for Los Bronces Integrated Project in Chile, setting up the next phase of development for one of the world's largest copper mines.

This project is an expansion of the open pit within the operating site of the Los Bronces copper mine in central Chile. It is targeting higher grade ore from a new underground section of the mine.

The London and Johannesburg-listed miner said in a statement on Tuesday it welcomed the decision in Chile by the committee of ministers to approve the environmental permit application for the Los Bronces project.

Following the environmental permit approval, Anglo American said it will continue to progress the project through its pre-feasibility stages towards submission for approval by its board in due course.

Ruben Fernandes, chief executive of Anglo American's Base Metals business, said: "We have designed the Los Bronces Integrated Project as an example of the very best of modern mining, bringing not only investment and jobs, but extensive protection for the environment and a considerable improvement in air quality for the broader region of Santiago."

The project uses the mine's existing processing facilities, optimises water efficiency, has no impact on glaciers and requires no additional fresh water or tailings facilities, Anglo American said.
