(Alliance News) - AFC Energy PLC on Monday marked a milestone for one of its zero-emission hydrogen power generators, which is the main power source charging Extreme E's Odyssey-21 race vehicles in the inaugural Extreme E all-electric SUV racing series.
The Surrey-based company creates hydrogen fuel cell systems and hydropower generating technology.
At the first three races of the off-road racing series, held in Saudi Arabia, Senegal and Greenland, AFC delivered green hydrogen through its on-site fuelling system, incorporating micro electrolysers, multiple mobile solar arrays and hydrogen storage technology.
AFC said the three countries provided extreme conditions that "highlighted the fuel cell's robust operating performance across a range of environments".
Operating data from the Extreme E races is now being used in wider discussions about future system engineering in the automotive racing industry.
"Extreme E's collaboration with AFC Energy means that we are the first event organiser to have ever used hydrogen fuel cell power generators for charging on site at race events," said Extreme E Founder & Chief Executive Alejandro Agag.
"AFC Energy has managed [diverse weather and conditions] and kept our cars fully powered. We are setting the standard for clean fuel provision in any situation - there's no excuses left for industry to not be 'clean' now, we know it can be done, we've proved it."
AFC's goal is to support sport and industries considering the switch to zero-emission hydropower technology by stopping their use of diesel generators.
The company noted its collaboration with Extreme E comes ahead of the COP26 climate conference in November.
Last month, AFC struck a partnership with ABB Ltd, delivering its first hydrogen fuel cell system for the automation technology company. Similar to Extreme E, the system will be integrated with the Zurich-based industrial conglomerate's electric vehicle charging system.
Shares were up 0.4% at 52.20 pence in London on Monday.
