AFC Energy Creates New High-Power Alkaline Fuel Cell

9th Apr 2019 10:52

LONDON (Alliance News) - AFC Energy PLC on Tuesday said it has developed a new high-power density alkaline fuel cell that is smaller and can accept lower grade hydrogen fuel sources.

Shares in AFC Energy were up 7.8% at 3.92 pence in morning trade.

Some of the technology developed around the system could also be transferable to other applications, AFC Energy said. The firm has completed some testing and is in talks with potential partners to commercialise some of the technology on a joint basis for non-fuel cell use.

The new technology behind the cells has been developed over 18 months and patents have been filed.

The power density of the new cell is greater and it also has a smaller volume, meaning it takes up less space and helps to reduce weight. Moreover, it can accept lower grade hydrogen fuel sources, as demonstrated by AFC Energy's existing fuel cell platform, AFC Energy added.

The new fuel cell system can be integrated into AFC Energy's electric vehicle recharging and e-mobility products, as well as in off-grid generation and system backup. It also has a quicker response time.

Prototype development will begin and, if successful, scale-up will occur over the next 12 moths. Each cell module is expected to have a 10 kilowatt-electric output.

"At AFC Energy, we now have a fuel cell platform capable of delivering performance only previously seen in other membrane-based fuel cell technologies, and at lower operating temperatures," said Chief Executive Adam Bond.

This is a major step forward in the alkaline fuel cell sector where AFC Energy continues to be at the cutting edge. The ability to license parts of this technology to non-core applications would also give rise to an additional revenue stream potential without compromising existing fuel cell market potential."
