Plant Impact invited to join the UK's Parliamentary and Scientific Committee to strengthen agricultural sector experience
Plant Impact (AIM:PIM), a developer of technologies that improve crop productivity, is pleased to announce that its application to join the UK Parliamentary and Scientific Committee as an industrial member has been successful.
The Parliamentary and Scientific Committee is Westminster's oldest all party associate committee. The 360 strong membership comprises 153 peers, MPs and MEPs together with 207 non Parliamentary bodies. Industry members on the committee include Pfizer, Monsanto, Merck Sharp and Dome, AstraZeneca, BASF and the Crop Protection Association. Plant Impact is the sole SME on the committee with technology focused on crop production in the agricultural sector.
The Committee's principle remit is to provide an interface between Parliamentarians and the UK's scientific communities, ensuring that the former are aware of new developments in science relevant to policy and that the latter are informed of priorities and interests in the development of policy and legislation relevant to scientific sectors.
Peter Blezard, CEO of Plant Impact commented: "We are very pleased to be appointed to the UK Parliamentary and Scientific Committee and look forward to bringing our expertise to bear in analysing the issues that affect and directly impact the UK's agricultural sector. Indeed, crop productivity is a key factor determining the industry's performance and we are proud to be at the forefront in developing recognised technologies geared to improving agricultural output."
The Committee plays a pivotal role in the identification of scientific issues that Parliament should address and is used by members representing scientific organisations to raise the profile of the sector's concerns. Recommendations may then be taken up by individual MPs, relevant Select Committees or form the basis of Parliamentary inquiries.
A recent example of this is the committee's influence, is the UK Parliamentary Inquiry into Global Food Crisis which arose as a direct result of the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee's meeting on Food Security - is it achievable? (18 November 2008). During the consultation and discussion phase, a DfID white paper was scrutinised and Ministers were required to give evidence. The inquiry report will be available shortly and will inform and make recommendations to Government on steps that need to be taken to mitigate against the food growing crisis and to improve food security.

Recent Deal
Plant Impact Plc recently signed a global sales marketing and distribution deal with Arysta LifeScience Corporation for BugOil®, a patented technology developed by the company over 6 years. BugOil® is a patented plant insecticide that uses a synergistic blend of plant essential oils to act against sap-feeding pests including mites, whitefly, thrips and aphids. BugOil® has proven high levels of efficacy and safety to the environment, users and customers when compared to currently available competitive products whose sales currently exceed US$800 million.
About BugOil®
BugOil® is a benign insect and mite control agent derived from essential plant oil technology that offers highly effective control in a non-toxic, environmentally friendly method. The pests targeted by BugOil® are mites, whitefly, thrips and aphids; these pests are some of the most damaging and most difficult to control as they reproduce quickly in mass numbers and can build resistance to conventional pest control agents.
Independent field trials conducted on BugOil® have demonstrated that the product has pest control abilities at least equal to, if not better, than those of current industry-standard insecticides. BugOil® also provides broad-spectrum pest coverage, particularly for ornamentals such as cut flowers. All field trials were conducted to regulatory standard by independent third parties on high-value crops such as ornamentals, fruit and vegetables. To date, successful field trials have been conducted on BugOil in the USA, UK, Europe and Africa.
BugOil® technology:
·; high level of efficacy equivalent to most current synthetic standards;
·; based totally on natural plant extracts;
·; safe for many non-target organisms including mammals, fish, birds, and most
beneficial insects (bees, earthworms, lacewings, ladybirds); and
·; non-toxic and environmentally friendly.
